Chapter 32
It had proven to be quite an eventful day, and it was still only 8.30! We finally arrived at the party and ended up leaving early, because the crowd around me was too much to deal with and we all just wanted to hang out together anyway. We drove around town for most of the night, trying to figure out what our new plans were gonna be, when I just started driving and figured I'd know when the right time to stop was. So we drove a little way out of town until we found a big empty field and decided to hang out there. The snow from Christmas had already melted and it wasn't *too* cold out. Not so much that we couldn't hang out outside of the car anyway. It was about 11.30 when we all got out and laid under the stars. Being away from town helped us to see them better and it was so beautiful.
Joe: Why do we always end up outside on a cold night whenever we all decide to hang out like this? It's just like Valentines Day. Only we're not on a playground...
Kevin: Oh yeah.... I dunno.... but it's nice. I think I like this better.
Joe: Me too. *He put his arm around me and pulled me closer to him.*
Shannon: *I sighed and said* Me three... *I snuggled in closer to Joe. I liked this a LOT better. As long as we didn't kiss. Even tho I still hadn't made my mind up about midnight.*
Andy: Yeah, me too..... I mean, me four! *We all laughed at her. And I think Kevin put his arm around her. I didn't want to look and see tho.*
Joe: Does everyone know what their resolutions are gonna be?
Andy: I wanna surround myself with better people. I think I'm doing pretty good so far...
Kevin: I agree. I still don't know what I want mine to be.... maybe.... maybe I'll stop being so stubborn. I'm kinda bad about that. What about you two?
Shannon: I'm gonna try not to kiss Joe! *I didn't mean to say it out loud, but everyone thought it was funny.*
Joe: Well luckily nobody ever sticks to their resolutions... So I'll get ya! *He sounded very cocky.... and irresistible.*
Shannon: Oh really? Well we'll just see about that! And what's *your* New Years resolution?
Joe: *He turned his head away from me and looked up at the stars for a moment, trying to pick out the best answer.* I wanna lose 50 pounds! *We all busted out laughing!*
Shannon: Oh my GOD Joe! You're so retarded and I love you! *I said it so affectionately that everyone got kinda quiet.*
Joe: *He hugged me tight with the one arm he had around me and kissed my forehead.* I love you too.
Being so close to Joe, even at nearly midnight, I could see the freckles on his nose and I loved them. I could see the sporadic hairs in between his eyebrows and I loved them. I could see every beautiful mole on his face and neck.... and I loved them. My stomach started to do that flipping thing again. I usually didn't notice it anymore, but it was so peaceful that night that I felt it every time. I was so in love with Joe, it hurt. I wondered, if I had never gone to Kansas City for those three months, would I have ever even noticed Joe? Would he still love me? Would he be agonizing over being in love with me and hating every guy I ever dated because I didn't care about him? How significant were those three months? Very... Those three months determined the course of the rest of my life. And I had Andy to thank for that. I suddenly wanted to hug Andy and tell her 'Thank you for being such a brat!' Because in reality, it all went back to her. But I didn't want to let go of Joe. So I decided to tell her about my realization when we got home.
It was nearly midnight, Joe was keeping time. And I really wanted to kiss him. Should I? No. Just a hug. No, but you're supposed to kiss. But I can't...
Joe: It's almost time guys! 30 seconds...
30 seconds to make up my mind? That wasn't long enough...
Joe: 10!
10 seconds to make up my mind? I can't do it!
Joe: 9!
9 seconds to make up my mind? I just can't!
Joe: 8!
Now 8!
Joe: 7!
That's a lucky number....
Joe: 5!
What happened to 6?
Joe: 4!
Ok, I had to do it.
Joe: 3!
But I won't!
Joe: 2!
I must!
Joe: 1! Happy New Year!
Before my mind was even finished racing back and forth my body had taken over. We were still lying down and my right hand was reaching up to Joe's face. I moved his face slightly towards mine and kissed him. Not on the mouth, but not completely on the cheek either. Sort of in between. It was simple and sweet and perfect. Just a peck. He looked at me and smiled and said...
Joe: Ok, you win. But as long as you kiss me like that, then I win too...
We snuggled up close to eachother and looked up at the sky. I think Andy and Kevin were kissing. Yucky... I didn't want to know... Me and Joe were having a moment anyhow, and oh how I loved our little Joe and Shannon moments......
