Hmm, too bad you can't simply disable groups by selecting all the tracks you want to disable and option+clicking the group. It only disables that one you're clicking on rather than all of them... Seems like a neat little feature to have.

Folks- Just an old school note. Sometimes the humming of an idle tom (s) is part of the overall drum sound and can make the drum set sound much more live and robust. This is very useful ff you are recording a Jazz kit for example.

Great tut man!
But I've got a problem, if I go in the edge of my waveforms, nothing happens. Do you know why?
Thx for helping us!
are you not cutting on waveforms? if so, wont this produce clicks and pops in the audio

@vr43kx The crossfades take care of it. No sweat.

What I would do is delete all of the regions that aren't doing anything. By that, I mean finding where the drummer is hitting the toms, for example, isolating those, fading them in and out and deleting all the other material. I mean, if you don't do that, or at least fiddle with your automation, all your going to hear is humming coming from the toms.

That can happen, but you don't need to do all of that editing. Use an expander/gate to silence the toms tracks when they don't need to be in the mix. If the toms are actually "humming," make sure that they are tuned and tight!

It's hard to get a gate to sound as natural as a good gradual fade-in/fade-out.
Also, I'm pretty sure if you listen closely enough, the toms hum just as much as the snares rattle when a drummer is playing.

I agree. If you've got the time to edit down toms tracks like that, that's probably the ideal, as its essentially a sample-accurate/customizable gate.
But, we use gates and expanders all the time for exactly this purpose - and with the right gates and the right settings (or if you are working with an analog recording medium, etc.) gating is a great solution.
