  • what is the rpm rating of this engine? i have one under restoration with a view to installing it into a small railway locomotive any info you may have would be a help as i have nothing at all

  • I think it was 1500 rpm. This would be flat out. Can`t be sure as i don`t own it anymore. I

  • nice sound impressed

  • Thanks.

  • Interesting that they would make the thing miss on purpose...is it to ensure good engine cooling?

  • No . The reason is balance. The cooling is very effective as air is forced past the cylinders by the fan incorperated in the flywheel.

  • yes both reach tdc at same time but one is firing other is exhausting.

  • Nice work, what a true machine!!

  • Douro20 - It's not 'missing'... it's a four stroke engine, so each cylinder only fires every second revolution anyway.

In a flat twin they're usually arranged to alternate like this for smoothest running.

(if they were arranged to fire together it would sound like a giant single, and deliver the power like one too, so would need a bigger flywheel.

  • interesting engine, nice one

  • These were made by the industrial engines division of the Enfield Cycle Company (yes, the same company who made motorcycles) from the late 40s until the works were sold in 1967 and moved to the Isle of Wight.

  • My friend has one of those, complete with little ether receptacle thingies for starting!

I've never seen it run though.

It was used in a boat, but the boat rotted away! a long lasting engine- quality.
