The SonTek RiverSurveyor is a new product that will allow hydrologists all over the world to collect flow in rivers and canals, faster, easier and in areas never thought possible. Typically used from a boat or other floating platform, The RiverSurveyor belongs to a class of instruments called Acoustic Doppler current profilers. These instruments measure water velocity by reflecting sound energy off of suspended solid matter in the water, and then computing the Doppler shift on the return echo. Simultaneously, the instrument also uses a built in echosounder to measure the channel depth (bathymetric profile). In most places around the world, hydrologists and technicians still uses heavy mechanical current meters suspended on cables to perform these tasks. it is a very time consuming and labor-intensive process.

In particular what is innovative about the S5 and M9 it is that they are the first instruments of their kind to utilize multifrequency acoustics. This enables one instrument to perform the same task that previously would have taken three instruments. This really becomes important when responding to extreme flood events. Agencies that measure water movement can now respond much faster to these events and make more measurements in les time. The multifequency technology also allows them to make continuous measurements out onto the floodplain - something not ever possible before. Other cutting edge technologies such as bluetooth, Windows Mobile and RTK GPS are employed to facilitate measurements.

Some of these areas include area include those prone to flooding during heavy down pours. The data collected will allow hydrologists and researchers to predict how fast water is moving and rising to allow for emergency response. Good data allows researchers to map trends and allocate resources to the areas that need them the most.
