@colw1983 I am related, on my Dads side, to Dame Clara and to you then somehow. My Dad's grandmother was one of 6 Butt Sisters- all very large and tall women-
Dame Clara was apparently quite an imposing figure, back in the days when there was an Empire worthy of the name.
Rule Britannia.

ROSA ELIZABETH BUTT, MY MUM, WAS CLARA'S COUSIN. MUM WAS BORN IN 1909 AND MET CLARA A NUMBER OF TIMES. I WAS BORN AFTER CLARA PASSED AWAY AND WOULD LOVE TO HAVE KNOWN HER, BUT I AM PROUD TO HAVE SUCH A WELL KNOWN AND BEAUTIFUL LADY AS A MEMBER OF MY FAMILY. SHIRLEY WILLIAMS

There is just no one like Dame Clara! I love her in every respect.

What beautiful natural phrasing. The verse is almost conversational, making a stunning contrast to the hymn-like finale.
Thanks for posting this. I'd never heard Clara Butt before.

This song, and her delivery of it. always seems to spark off a sharp interchange of opinion. My own is that the song although somewhat mawkish to todays ear reflects the solemnity with which the victorians and edwardians regarded "the other world" and that Dame Claras simple and powerful approach makes it more moving than any other "operatic" performance.Gigli rather awful but the italians never could do this kind of song. Galli-Curci also failed notably in her attempts at english ballads.
58 and she could still like this!

This may be the closest we have to an authentic recording, as Miss Butt had sung in concert with Arthur Sullivan conducting on more than one occasion during his lifetime. (He died in 1900.) No way of knowing if she ever sang Lost Chord for him, but as it was one of his greatest hits outside of Gilbert & Sullivan, it's not hard to imagine she did.
