Thanks to brave people like Kirk Douglas who got Dalton Trumbo screen credit on Spartacus , then in the 60's films like Hud and Bonnie and Clyde said to hell with the MPAA, Hayes code was smashed and the movie industry was allowed to grow up and show life as it really is.

Screenwriters had to be clever after the Hayes Document. Treating citizens like errant children who don't know what they need. The censors practically gutted many a script. Thank God for wonderful, subtle, talented screenwriters. You don't really think people were that whitebread, do you? Nothing new under the sun.

Look, life was HARD. You worked without complaining and romantic love was hard to come by or the harsh realities would make it shortlived. Remember, more infants died than lived. How many times would you have to harden yourself just to see another day? I think the mother has to deal with her pent up desires and dreams when Shane and her cross paths. You can't judge your emotions. That's where this script draws so much raw power.
