Carnegie Challenge Cup 2009 Preliminary & First Round Draw

The road to Wembley begins...

The draws for the Preliminary and First Round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup have taken place at Headingley Campus.

A total of 64 Rugby League teams from across the UK are involved in the tournament.

Leeds Met Carnegie have drawn Bristol Sonics in the preliminary round with the winner facing the Warrington Wizards in the first round.

All the teams from the Fraser Eagle National Conference League Premier, Division One and Division Two are included in the draw along with the winners of a number of regional community leagues and cups.

These include the Champions of the Yorkshire, Hull & District, Cumberland, North West Counties and Pennine Leagues as well as the winners of the Cumbria, Lancashire and Yorkshire County Cups and a BARLA nomination.

The Co-operative Rugby League Conference National is represented in the competition by Warrington Wizards and Featherstone Lions whilst Bristol Sonics, Nottingham Outlaws and West London Sharks are flying the flag for The Co-operative Rugby League Conference Regional competition.

Other teams involved are the Scottish and Welsh Champions - Edinburgh Eagles and Valley Cougars, six University teams including Leeds Met Carnegie as well as the RAF, Royal Navy and British Army Rugby League teams.

Representatives from each team were invited to attend the draw which took place with Ireland Rugby League Head Coach Andy Kelly and an RFL representative drawing the balls out.

To mark the launch of this year's competition Rugby League legends such as Alex Murphy were present at the celebration evening to share their Carnegie Challenge Cup experiences from the grass roots level through to playing in a Wembley Final.
