1997 Austrian film on the left (and left speaker), 2008 American film on the right (and right speaker on "higher quality" if it decides to up).

I decided to go with one of the more mundane, earlier scenes. I doubt anyone finds the side-by-side thing nearly as amusing as me, so there's not really any reason for me to make any more. But, on the off chance you do enjoy it, and have a scene in mind you want to see side-by-side, just say so in the comments, and sure thing.

  • If anybody hasn't watched either, watch the American one. The same director did both, and the American one is definitely just better, despite your shitty hipster instincts that the foreign original might be better. We all have them, but in this case we must ignore them. The kids look way creepier and are just plain better actors.

  • The dry, lifeless delivery of the first film isn't necessarily 'bad acting'--that can be scarier and more psychopathic than a more 'realistically' portrayed character.

And Arno Frisch in the first one is weirdly sexy, so that adds onto my reason for (only very slightly) preferring the first.

  • i dunno, i dont really know why youd do an almost exact replica of an already great film... especially from a director like haneke.

  • @yummymayo do you know that Haneke did it himself?

  • actually, it's the same director. michael haneke wanted to make it in english so he could direct it toward a broader audience.

  • @jadepoteat who are you talking to? jw.

  • @Volcanic9 Nooo, Arno Frisch is just fantastic. Also, I watched the original before the remake came out. And also, both movies are foreign. To me. And do you speak german? Alot easier to judge the acting that way.

  • it seems like people prefer the version that fits their mother tongue...and i'd say it's because it's a verbal film.

most the tension is built up by the (verbal) acting - which may feel dull if it's a foreign language, even if you speak it.

that being said, a remake in another language does make sense.

  • I think that the fact that Haneke replicated his original film almost exactly just shows how incredibly pretentious he is.

  • americans are allergic to subs

  • People always find something to complain about even when the movie is directed by the same person on both versions and in the exact same way. I don't get it. Maybe they are just stupid.

  • I pefer the second version of this movie, the killers are muche better!

  • I hear german :D

    xD

  • @molcoo I'd have to agree about one thing, and that's that Naomi Watts was the wrong one for this movie, but Tim Roth and Michel Pitt kicked total ass in the US version. People are always elitists when it comes to the originals, it's like the anime argument original vs dubbed. In some uncommon cases, the english dub is better, and I believe that is the case for the US version of "Funny Games". And yes, the polish does make it nicer.
