Set in a spectacular canyon, 150 metres deep, Rocamadour is the site of one of the most celebrated pilgrimages of Western Europe.
Historians believe that the pilgrimage to Rocamadour began before the end of the first millennium.
In 1166 the uncorrupted body of a hermit was discovered beneath the threshold of the troglodite chapel. He was named as Amadour, and his resting-place named Roc-Amadour.
L'escalier des pèlerins, with 216 steps, is at the foot of the château abbatial.
Pilgrims climbed the steps on their knees - one of the major stages of the pilgrimage, before entering the sanctuaries.
Les sanctuaires are at the heart of the religeous cité, with it's seven chapels and churches.
La chapelle Notre-Dame is the sanctuary of the Black Madonna. Covered with blackened sheets of silver, this is the reliquary statue of Notre-Dame de Rocamadour.
La place des Senhals was the commercial centre for sportelles (moulded metal badges) which were the mark of pilgrims to Rocamadour. The sportelle may be made of gold, silver, tin, bronze or lead.
Today the attracting many followers.pilgrimage is still vibrant.
