How did 3D Realms close down? Two words. George Broussard. Duke Nukem Forever now hangs in limbo. The only thing keeping it from being finished and played by gamers all over the world is... George Broussard. George's greed is keeping the DNF intellectual property from being sold into the hands of a competent developer. Comments, supporting or dissenting opinions welcome.

  • i loved Rise of the Triads. Loved it. now that Duke nukem is screwed, maybe they should screw this game too.

  • @siddbastard It's not a bad game, although it suffered from Doom clone syndrome. But I'm willing to bet it's a hell of a lot better than DNF.

  • @EnigmaHood ROTT was in the works months before Doom was released. ROTT was designed as a sequel/expansion to Wolfenstein 3D (thus all the 90 degree walls). Doom then came out and Id Software (Doom's creators) cancelled the Wolfenstein expansion, so not to divert attention from Doom. Apogee continued the project but gave it a new plot and design, hence why it was released so much later.

  • @Nogli ROTT was designed as a sequel to Wolfenstein but it was being made by Apogee, and they didn't have the rights to make a sequel to Wolfenstein (why they thought they did, I have no idea). So they dropped all the ties to Wolfenstein and made it a stand alone game. That doesn't change the fact that did suffer from Doom clone syndrome. And sure enough, it was in fact better than the shit storm that is DNF.

  • @EnigmaHood Apogee published Commander Keen and Wolfenstein, made by id Software. As Apogee functioned also as a developer, I'm guessing John Carmack commissioned Apogee to make it, thus why he was able to cancel the project, and Apogee could use the remnants to make that standalone game.

It's such a shame what became of DNF. And for the record, whether it's down to quality or nostalgia, I love ROTT.

  • @Nogli I know man, I've been an Apogee fan since Duke Nukem 1, I know all about their history. But I have never heard anything about Carmack giving them the ok to make a sequel to Wolfenstein. My guess is, they thought they had the right to make it, but they were wised up later on. ROTT was ok. It's not bad, and has nostalgia value, but games like Doom were, well... Better. But like I said, it beats the pants off of DNF any day.

  • I commend Gearbox for releasing this game. Some people may not like it, but I did.

  • Gotta admit. This guy called it.

  • @EnigmaHood you mean the Rise of the Triads from 1994 being better than this DNF from 2011 ?

well ... yeah, probably ... as ridiculous as it sounds.
