Today, 26 years ago, Eleanor Powell passed away. My new homage (this is the fifth, check the others) to the Queen of Tap. She is very much alive in the hearts and minds of dancers and non dancers worldwide. Her incredible talent, tap dance and athletic skills plus all the hardwork is what made her immortal. When Eleanor Powell was very young the studios where her tap numbers were filmed were packed with all the big Hollywood stars, they didn't want to miss the spectacle that was to witness all those legendary takes. Special tiers or bleachers where built behind the cameramen so all the numerous stars could enjoy Ellie's dance numbers on the process of being shot. Nowadays ..... she must be up there.....somewhere..... in that special heaven for artists, dancing and entertaining all the other souls of gifted performers. MUSIC USED IN THIS VIDEO: I took the sound for one of her most elaborate tap routines: "Fascinatin' Rhythm", taken from the film 'Lady Be Good'.

  • At 3:08 you'll see my mother (stage name Lee Bailey) in the bonnet outfit. Mom was her stand in for most of the big films LBG, Rosalie, Born to Dance, Honolulu, etc.

  • The opening colour photo of Ellie is truly wonderful. I now own the original vintage photograph of the photo from the 1930's. I bought it a couple of weeks ago.

  • Super! Don't know how I missed this one - thanks! Thanks also for the interesting information. Who wouldn't want to watch her dance live? I think I saw her up there tonight - the brightest star in the sky. : )
