This is a video of our daughter when she contracted croup. The cough is at 1:48.
This was after being admitted to the ER and being administered an oral steroid so her cough was improving and less frequent by this point.

  • Hi Mandy, Our doctor also prescribed antibiotics and I tried to wait it out and see if the antibiotics would help and it did not. Her condition worsened. I brought her to emerg, and the doctors were upset that she'd been prescribed antibiotics. It does nothing to help croup. She needed an oral steroid (epinephrine, pediapred) delivered by a nebulizer... after receiving those treatments her condition immediately improved. If your child is struggling to breathe, go to emerg. Hope this helps.

  • I'm an Infectious Disease Pediatric Nurse. There is no treatment for croup (laryngotracheobronchitis), from an antibiotic perspective. It is viral. You can give orapred (a steroid) for inflammation of the larynx, and if the child is experiencing respiratory distress, they can be given racemic epi via nebulizer and O2. The key to croup is to keep the kids calm (anxiety brings on the coughing spells), and once they start coughing, be supportive.
