Dan Cobley is Googles marketing director for the UK, Ireland and Benelux. This year he was a judge of the HSBC Start-Up Stars awards and was able to witness first-hand some of Britains brightest start-up businesses. Prior to Google, Dan worked at Capital One Europe where he helped make the company the UKs leading new card issuer. Dan has a first degree in Physics from Oxford and a Masters in Management from Cambridge.

2) Having some humility about what you don't know
3) How fast can you grow with the funds that you have
4) Think about ways to make money that won't drive your customers away

6) Be careful about scaling too quickly. Focus on the objective.
