Sedia Berbakti - Heart_Hati, composed by Ak Amilin

TEN local composers/songwriters battled it out to win the grand prize in the finals of the Silver Jubilee National Day Celebration Songwriting Competition, last night.

Emerging as champion was Ak Hj Mohd Khairul Amilin Pg Hj Yahya with his song Sedia Berbakti. He also won second prize for his second composition Merdeka Brunei Darussalam.

Organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Radio, Televisyen Brunei (RTB) and the Prime Minister's Office, the competition was first held in 1988 with only nine people competing where memorable songs such as Tanah Airku, Negara Tercinta and Tekad Perwaris, were created. The second competition was held in 2004.

This year's competition is the third edition which is held appropriately seeing as the country will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of its independence next month.

Held at RTB Studio in front of a live audience, the competition, which was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Paduka Hj Jemat Hj Ampal, kicked off with a sketch on social issues by a pool of young and talented local performers before the competition began.

Some 34 participants took part in the competition from which only 10 made it to the finals. Most of the finalists were up and coming talents while the rest were veterans in their own fields.

Champion received a cash prize of $2,000, the Champion's Trophy and a certificate of participation, first runner-up bagged $1,500, a trophy and a certificate and second runner-up received $1,000, trophy and a certificate. (SRH1)
