This one hurt when I heard the news. Evel Knievel was my first childhood hero. I doubt there wasn't a time when I hopped on my bike as a kid that I didn't think of him, and pretended to be like him. I remember setting up plywood ramps at the end of my street with all my friends, emulating Evel's latest feat. Our heights were measured in only inches, but our imaginations soared. I had the toys... motorcycle, scramble van, Skull Canyon set... I recall even wearing a Evel costume one year for Halloween. Treasured memories...

Here's to the bravest, toughest and downright coolest hero any kid could ever have. Rest in peace... you've earned it.

I dug into the vault for this one... a great interview from the early 70s. Just for fun I left the original commercials in. I'll leave this up for a few days.

  • elvis on a bike

  • Guts? who had more than this guy? Evil Knievel--hero of the 70's.

  • Knievel was a Bad Dude! I heard he took a BAT to a promoters head for talking bad about EVEL in a newspaper!

  • Great vid -thanks for the post!! I saw the actual snake river canyon ramp when I was a kid (from a distance - drive by). I was stoked and bragged to my friends right up until he jumped.

  • @DrRockter5150 I dig fast forwarding through the commercials. Wish i could do the same on TV. Maybe 5% of commercials i want to see.

  • evel totally inspired me as a kid, along with many of my childhood friends.

  • I dig the old commercials! Like going back in time!

  • What a legend

  • WOW..Evel Knievel and Dizzy Gillespie(?)

  • I wouldn't mind it if they had a "vintage week" on TV. I would watch for the commercials, not the program. lol
