1959. music Richard Rodgers. lyrics Oscar Hammerstein II.

the gorgeous show tune from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, 'The Sound of Music'.

Literally, named after the 'edelweiss', the white flower found high in the Alps of Austria, where the stage production is set.

Rodgers gave the tune a haunting waltz-time signature, and it is sung, powerfully, as a paean to the Austrian homeland of Captain Von Trapp, and also is used as a refrain to evoke the Captain's love for his children. It became the stand-out song of the musical, and arguably, one of the most dearly loved co-writes of the Rodgers and Hammerstein songwriting duo. It was the last song they wrote together.

I recorded this simple chord solo arrangement of the song on a Mya Moe Walnut tenor ukulele, at home in March 2011
