Nikolaj Orloff (or Nicolas or Nikolai) (1892-1964) is a now rarely-heard Russian concert pianist, who was considered among the great pianists of his time. Among his few recordings are this ca. 1927 Ampico reproducing piano roll in which he performs Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 8, sometimes nicknamed the "Sunshine" etude. The piece is a virtuouso study in counterpoint with the primary theme in the left hand bass. The performance is heard from an original Ampico roll # 6775-1 on a 1926 Knabe 5'4" Ampico grand that was fully restored in early 2011. For more information, see www.historicpianos.com.
