This is a short clip of sea lions rafting at Palmer's Point, Humboldt County, California on May 25, 2009. I assume they are all California sea lions. They float with their fins out of the water like this to help with their temperature regulation. It seemed like all the good places to haul out on the rocks were taken, and the rafters were doing their best to keep warm. The water temperature was about 47F/9C and the air was around 60F/15C. Our water temperatures get really cold when the winds blow from the north in the spring. This cold water is rich in nutrients because it is "upwelled" from the deep. This is what supports the rich marine life of this region.
