Special Report: Strong quake jolts SW China

It's been 8-9 days since the earthquake shook Sichuan. Rescuers are still on the front lines, and part of their job is helping locals overcome difficulties as they arise. Our correspondent Mao Xuzhi is in Dujiangyan, and she looks at the bonds being formed between the rescue workers and survivors.

These farmers, young and old, men and women, are delivering
hot drinking water to the troop camped at the suburbs of
the city of Dujiangyan. On their tractor it says "Appreciation
to Our Beloved Troops".

This is a special ceremony to admit new communist members from the young armed police. The team has been helping with the rescue work since the devastating earthquake took place last Monday.

Among the 4 newly admitted Communist members is 22-year-old He Jian. He performed bravely during the rescue work--looking for victims in the debris, helping construct tents and rationing daily necessities for locals. But nobody can tell He Jian lost all his 8 family members during the deadly earthquake, including his dad and grandma.

This is He Jian's hometown, Qingchuan County, a place located to the northeast of the epicenter Wenchuan. The village where He Jian lives was demolished out of the landslide of the earthquake. Though deeply grief in heart, He says he wanted to help those alive.

He Jian said "It's useless to go back to my hometown. The whole village disappeared. Now the troop needs me. I'd rather do something to other survivors than stay here weeping."

These farmers, young and old, men and women, are delivering hot drinking water to the troop camped at the suburbs of the city of Dujiangyan. On their tractor it says "Appreciation to Our Beloved Troops". They all lost their homes. And they expressed their appreciation to the rescuers in the simplest but sincerest way.

One quake survivor in Dujiangyan said "The troops come here to rescue and assist us. We thank them from our hearts. It's just a way to deliver our appreciation."
