1 Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
1 Corinthians 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
1 Corinthians 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

If Paul is not talking about being saved by keeping something in memory, then what would another way be of trying to interpret this passage so that it makes sense and we don't move back to the salvation from sins idea.

Just say it doesn't have to do with salvation from sins. It has to do with salvation from something else. Paul must not be talking about salvation from sins in the first place. After all, when the translators used the word salvation, they weren't always referring to salvation from sins, were they? No, they weren't. Sometimes they were talking about salvation from false doctrine. Sometime they were talking about salvation from physical death.

Salvation simply means deliverance until the context defines what type of salvation the writer has in mind. Deliverance can be take on many forms as you folks well know. Thus, not wanting to think that Paul could possibly use the word IF in connection with salvation, what do they do? They say that this doesn't have to do with salvation from sins.

We might call that the salvation to appropriate service viewpoint. And there are those who go there. The idea being, Paul wouldn't raise the possibility of a person losing his salvation therefore, Paul must not be talking about salvation in the context of sins in the first place, not in this passage. He must be talking about being delivered to serve God in a Godly manner; delivered to serve appropriately. He must be talking about being saved from practicing a sinful lifestyle which was certainly a problem at Corinth wasn't it? Sure, it was! They were carnal. They were fleshly oriented.

So you can see how that tendency might be there for a pastor to say, "Oh, this is talking about being delivered from an ungodly lifestyle, certainly the Corinthians needed that.

In order to be saved from practicing a sinful lifestyle, you must keep remembering what you were saved from was the idea set forth. Well, I'm sorry to bust anyone's bubble, but I don't think that's what Paul has in mind here at all!

Starting out with the right message rather than starting out with the wrong message. Paul is dealing with resurrection here. Why?—because some of the Corinthian believers had actually begun to believe that resurrection of the body was no longer a viable belief. They had begun right. They had heard Paul's gospel and had believed Paul's gospel, but then, some had come in saying bodily resurrection is not really a viable belief. It was not necessarily an issue of whether or not a person's soul or spirit would live on, because they didn't have a problem with that idea, but some looked at the body as being a confinement, or a prison for the soul; the prison of the spirit. So, their skepticism was wrapped-up in the idea that after a person died, why trap that soul in another body even if it was to be a new body. And with that thinking, there was really no need for a bodily resurrection after all. This is the way some reasoned it. Now, that might not have been the mind-set of all who disbelieved, but it was certainly the thinking of some folks in Corinth. In fact, some manner of doubt, I believe has always been with us, for whatever the reason down through history.
