I was diagnosed at the age of 14, October 13, 2009. One of my first symptoms were blindness in my right eye. Then it began to really hit me. I started having trouble walking. I remember that one day I was getting ready for school and I couldn't stand. I was confused on why I wasn't able to move my lower body parts. So, I attempted to crawl. In my house there are two flights of steps, my bedroom was on the top floor. I crawled and slid down the steps and told my mom what was going on. She had me stay home from school and I laid in the bed, not my own bed, but a bed that was downstairs. It started to get a little better, but then I noticed that everything cold I touched, burned. I would scream so much at the pain. I couldn't even go outside to play in the snow, that's how bad it would burn. It wouldn't leave a burn mark or anything, it just burned. When I was making coffee for my mom, I remember my niece tugging at my pant leg and I had a hot coffee pot in my hand. She continuously tugged me and the pot fell. Want to guess who it landed on?.. It landed on me. I pushed her away as hard as I could and the pot fell on my foot. I cried so hard to my mother. Later on in the month, I had to go to the hospital for extreme pain in my back. They did numerous of tests on me. I felt like an experiment. I had gotten X-Rays, Spinal Taps, and MRI's done, but they really couldn't find out what I had. So finally, a doctor came to my mother and explained to them that they thought it was Transverse Myelitis, something that IS curable, but they told her and I that I had Devics Syndrome. During the course of the years that I've accepted this disease, my mother told me one day while I was in Rehab (it was for helping me walking), she said "Have you noticed that our family has become closer? We're normally not close like this. So, don't think of this as a curse, think of it as a gift." In my mind I was thinking "IN WHAT WAY IS THIS A GIFT?!!", but I kind of grasped what she was talking about. Do you know what it feels like to one day have your baby niece laying beside you, then the next day, not being able to see her on the same side? I've cried over a hundred times about it. I dislike the fact that I have to adjust everything in order for me to properly see things. It's annoying. I feel like that I'm unable to complete things because of this, but I keep on pushing myself so I can do it. I've been left back about three times. I am currently still a sophomore, 3rd year to be exact, I still have trouble with my attendance due to my absences. I've even had homeschooling, but I try to work my way around it. Things get hard ALL of the time. Yeah, I complain about it, but I do it anyway. That's just the way life goes. To summarize this into about two sentences, help those in need, especially ones with incurable diseases such as myself.
