Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that retrievers are supposed to retrieve birds that have already been shot. Hopefully that way it would be less painful for the bird.

My springer caught a live small bird in his dry mouth, lived to tell the tale cos i made him let it go.

The best way to prevent it is to introduce very young puppies to gunshot. For an older dog that has developed gunshyness and thunderphobia, it's best to talk to a professional behaviorist. Basically, what they'll tell you to do is to feed and play with the dog with low recordings of gun shots and thunder until the dog associates those sounds with good things. Then the stimulus will be increased until the dog likes the sounds. It takes a while to get them over this.

I pat hunted with my Golden the first few years but she got gun shy then was scared of thunder a short time later. Any way to prevent this? She loved taking the pats and showing them to everyone in the camp. Proudest Golden ever!

lol ya
You need to train him on live birds. He'll be able to pick up a live bird without injuring it at all. What you need to do is get him retrieving pigeons that have their wings shackled, then move him onto other birds, including live ducks.
