City of Chicago - Luka Bloom (as gaeilge)

Tá an amhrán seo ó ceol 06.

This song is from ceol 06 and is sung in the Irish language. Christy Moore, (luka's brother) may be more famous for singing this song, but Luka wrote it. It tells the story of what An Gorta Mór (the great hunger or the irish patato famine ) did to Ireland. How millions were forced to leave their native land and seek a new life elsewhere.

The piece at the beginning is from " The field " with Richard Harris and Sean Bean. (written by John B Keane)

Nuair ba mhaith leat nios mó eolas faoi an Gorta Mór teigh go http://www.nde.state.ne.us/ss/irish/irish_pf.html

Cathair Mhór Chicago (Luka Bloom)

Luka Bloom: glór, giotár
Scriofa agus Cumtha ag luka bloom.
Foilsithe ag: luka bloom music; Riartha ag IMRO Ireland
Aistrithe ag Jamie Ó Tuama agus Críostóir Ó Marcaigh
Taifeadadh agus Meascadh: Steve Lynch, Stellar Studios/Stiúideo na Life

Thiar i gcathair mhór Chicago,
Is an oích' ag dul faoi scáth,
Tá daoine ann ag smaointiú,
Ar na sléibhte i nDún na nGall.

An tráth sin, lár na haoise,
Le linn an Ghorta Mhóir,
Pianta gránna ocrais --
D'imigh milliún lán le deor'.

Gan saibhreas ar a n-intinn,
Gan ghlóir ar bith taobh thiar,
Ag streacailt 'is ag caoineadh,
Báid Bhána ar an mhuir.

Ar roinnt acu bhí saibhreas,
Roinnt eile, clú is cáil,
Bhí anró ann gan ghearán,
Is cailleadh ar an máigh.

Ag siúl ar fud na tíre,
'S ar bhóithre iarainn leo,
Ag scaipeadh cheol a gcroíthe,
'Tabhairt sochair dá gcuid bróin.

  • Some of them were rich,Others, well known,There was hardship without complaint,The loss of the Moy.Walking across the country,I iron them on roads,Distributing music to their hearts,

    'Tackling benefit their sorrow.

  • West in a big city Chicago,The night goes under the umbrella,There are people thinking,On the mountains in Donegal.

At that time, middle age,During the Famine,Nasty hunger pains Has left many with tears one million.Without wealth on their minds,Without any glory behind,At streacailt 'is crying,White boat on the sea...
