This is from a Rare Southbank Show Special documentary.I don't know if it ever aired. It was made to precede the arrival of the first ever British production of ST in 1980-81.The highlights are large sections of Stephen Sondheim himself discussing the writing of the show from the piano at his home.He details and plays many of the numbers from the score! The Original Director Hal Prince is Featured throughout as well. The London Sweeney is Denis Quilley, and Mrs.Lovett is Played by Sheila Hancock. The Playwright Christopher Bond is also on hand.Enjoy.

  • I will admit that if Sondheim did a musical based on the Yellow Pages I would be rabid to see/hear it but when Hal Prince said that it only took him two hours to plan out "Johanna" I have to say, "Oh my @#&%! %^$**& @#!$%# *#$@!?" or "WOW"

  • Man... how this makes me wish a London cast recording had been released.

  • It bothers me that so many people say that this production sucks. While it may have been performed differently that the Broadway version it wasn't that bad, a lot of the problem was with the audio randomly speeding up during sections.

  • Guys, Angela Lansbury was born and raised in England, she moved to America at 15 years old, so she is British, even though she has spent most of her life her in the US... But I know what you all mean, a true Brit who has remained there.... just making a point!

  • @AnalogJ Aha, now I did! Forgive me! :P

  • @freedom509rwk Thanks freedom. You didn't, by any chance, notice the 'wink' icon in my post, did you?

  • @AnalogJ Angela Lansbury is British...

  • @kathish you would pay money to hear this cast on CD????? I certainly wouldn't

  • Yeah. I'm wondering what it would have sounded like if we had had a British actress play Mrs. Lovett rather than Angela Lansbury. ;^)

  • Pardon my typo....YANKS! (Americans to the rest of you non-Brits)

  • Oh, me too! I'd love to hear Sweeney done with British actors, not that my fellow Yahks can't kick it out!
