PETER MINTUN: Carioca from 'Flying Down To Rio' 1933

Carioca is the first number danced in a film by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, who were supporting players in the 1933 release 'Flying Down To Rio.' As Ginger and Fred approach the dance floor, she says to him, 'We'll show them a thing or three.' The music is by the great Vincent Youmans, and the lyrics by the prolific Gus Kahn and Edward Eliscu. The concept of a longer-format song continued throughout the mid-1930s with such gems as "The Continental" (which won the Academy Award for best song in 1934), "Piccolino," "Lullaby of Broadway" (voted best song in 1935), "The Martinique," "The Balboa" and others. This type song was spoofed successfully in the film 'George White's 1935 Scandals' with "Hunkadola" (Yellen-Friend-Meyer) and on Broadway with "The Gazooka" (Ira Gershwin-Vernon Duke) in 'Ziegfeld Follies of 1936.'
