Recently TPMtv connected with Juan Cole, professor of modern Middle Eastern and South Asian history at the University of Michigan, and writer of the blog Informed Comment and the new book Napoleon's Egypt. We asked Juan about what's really going on in al Anbar province (which the administration persistently cites as a glimmering example of the success of the surge), whether the Sunnis are ready to concede national reconciliation, and what might happen if and when we ever leave Iraq.

  • This war was strategically designed to send the regine in to chaos, make lots of money for private interests, and spread to Iran...in large part to snag the oil. Its something the powers that be have had planned since the before the Gulf war. If we ellect ANY of the top tier candidates, this foreign policy will continue.

  • Thank you TPM and Prof Cole for this great and illuminating interview. Good thing objective, informed and intelligent voices like Prof Cole's have been completely shut out of our Iraq/Middle East policy... At least you guys are getting the truth out there, amazing how complex situations like this are presented in the most simplistic POV here in the US media. Thanks for adding this much needed perspective.

  • Great Interview! It is so refreshing to see someone who is not motivated by some unseen entities agenda. Keep up the good work TPM. I am a huge fan and watch daily.

  • Juan Cole is awesome. His "Informed Comment" blog is one of the most informative sites on the Internet when it comes to Iraq and the Middle East. Strongly recommended.

  • This guy got it absolutely right.
