In 1980, WNBC revamped its entire station image and news operation. The traditional plain "4" was dropped for a fancy, die-cut "4". "NewsCenter 4", which ran for 2 hours from 5 to 7pm, was split into two halves. "News 4 New York" was the 6pm show featuring in-depth reports; "Live at Five" was the cheaper, earlier show that featured in-studio segments. All this came with great music by Edd Kalehoff and a landmark set in the history of television - the control room set, where light was more selectively used, creating a dramatic, in-depth feel.
An interesting variation of the open - instead of appearing on black, the logo now flies out from the torch of the statue of liberty! This is for the 11pm, with Sue and Chuck anchoring together.

  • Chuck Scarborough and Sue Simmons, amazing they are still there at WNBC after all these years. Still covering News 4 New York. They still look the same for the most part.

  • "Jimmy Carter?.. He's history's greatest monster!!!" :P

  • @Lazygreek07 Indeed, Chuck Scarborough and Sue Simmons have lasted together a lot longer than NBC's other Chuck and Sue, Chuck Woolery and Susan Stafford.

  • Al Roker goes waaay back... clear back to the 70's as I recall. he was certainly there before 1980!

  • al was a very very robust individual back then

  • What do you mean he wouldn't fit on the screen in those years?

  • Al wouldnt fit on the screen in those years. haha.

  • UPDATE: It's been discovered that it was Jim McAllister, NOT Edd Kalehoff, who created both the original N4NY theme ('80) and the '87 update!

  • Can you get the other news 4 ny theme and intro from the late 80's early 90's same thing, but more serious?

  • Actually, he looks more like Jimmy Carter.
