I'm working on this List C piece for my grade 10 piano exam (RCM). List "C" is the Romantic era. The music was composed by Balakirev (Russian) and it is based on a song written by M. Glinka.

Actually it's an ARCT piece but I'm allowed to substitute one of my List pieces with a level higher. I found it to be both exhilerating and difficult to play. I become quite emotional when I play it.

Please enjoy it and feel free to comment on how to improve.

  • Wow, this piece is so pretty and evocative. It kind of reminds me of Liszt's "Liebestraum", and I find it hard to believe that this is from the same composer who wrote "Islamey".

Your playing has become so much better! I guess playing those nocturnes really did move you, didn't it. You did this wonderfully; the whole way you had so much control over all the voices, which I think is so important for a piece like this with so many soaring runs and moody chords at the same time.

  • Many thanks for your generous encouragement. I listened to Granados's "The Maiden and the Nightingale" and it's hauntingly compelling as well. I'm learning some Rachmaninoff and a Chopin Etude now - both are challenging but incredibly rewarding. Again, thanks for your kind words.

  • Extraordinary playing - absolutely amazing. Thank you for posting this!

  • Absolutely sublime! Gave me genuine shivers down my spine - especially around 5:35 and other places as well. Very sensitive playing.

  • iiiiii really dont understand how people can whrite such a moving piece... how can they get the exact feeling that there having on sheet music ????

im going to study composition.. and piano.. but when i whrite music i cant get this much emotion on the sheet music........

how longer i think of music, how more i understand how special it is..

but keep up the good work

  • Very nice playing! The song is lovely as well. It is a very piece full of expression, and you played it well. May I ask, as I am unfamiliar with the Canadian RCM system, do the grades go along with school grades, or are they different? Thank you. And again very beautiful playing. :)

  • WOW! Nice playing & nice camera work. You're certainly going to go places, young man.

  • Impressive, impassioned playing of this famous piece.

  • very good, Bravo
