Netflix delivers highly dynamic WebKit based UIs to televisions, game consoles and Blu-ray players. Matt will discuss fluid animation with hardware acceleration; achieving high framerates using accelerated compositing; responding to constant user input; as well as balancing strategies for best performance on over 450 high-end to low-end devices.

Very good points with one glaring issue for the rest of us: Netflix controls their audience through webkit so that's all they need to target. The broader web-at-large is more than just webkit so some of those optimizations (such as only animating with CSS) are unrealistic when you're faced with a broader browser base. Still, there is a lot of value to take away from Matt's presentation.

I love the accelerated composting section at around minute 28 in the video.

Both are "good coding." In this case, browser redraws are a processor-intensive process on a small scale device. Simply moving the canvas does not trigger redraws, but display:none does. It's good coding for this specific challenge.

This is so contrary to how I think of good coding. Hiding images by moving them offscreen instead of using display:none? It's very interesting to see how coding in the real world for netflix goes against some of the lessons I've learned in coding for fun.
