I'll be talking about illegal pawn drops, Which are "mate with a dropped pawn" and "two pawns in a file".
I'll also show you a brilliant mate problem, in which a rook chooses to unpromote so as to avoid "mate with a dropped pawn".

  • Don't forget the THIRD illegal pawn drop : putting it on the last line.

  • @shion255 It is already covered in earlier videos, because it is not illegal PAWN drop. There basic illegal drops.

  • So I can't do checkmate with a dropped pawn, but I can drop all other pieces (Lance, Knight, Silver & Gold Generals, Bishop and Rook) for immediate checkmate, right?

  • @vishalb That's right.

  • Hi Hidetchi, thanks for these videos, they're fantastic! If an illegal move or illegal drop is made, and the opponent does NOT notice it and plays on, but notices it afterwards, can he still say that an illegal move happened earlier and win the game? Or does he have to notice it immediately? And if that is the case, then does the game just continue with the effects of the illegal move, so for example, play continues on with 2 pawns in the file? Thanks again

  • The player who made the illegal move loses the game even when it was pointed out later in the game.

However, if it was pointed out after his opponent made a resignation, it's a win for him. But it's very unlikely because the people who are watching the game are allowed to point out an illegal move.

  • @1Celebrindor No, pieces may not promote at the same time as the drop. You have to drop and then move it in the next move to promote.

  • @hirohiigo Thanks

  • @HIDETCHI I have two quick questions about Shogi

    1. can I drop a piece and promote it at the same time?

    2. If I can drop a piece and promote it at the same time, can I drop a tokin (promoted pawn) to get checkmate?

    Thanks

PS: these videos are great! thanks for making them.

  • @TheCommonCritic The knight on 2d.

  • Around 2:33, what would have prohibited the King from capturing the Pawn?

  • LOL let's mate this king.

but yes the videos are amazing good for beginners in shogi like me. Thanks for the upload XD

  • @k13scdude Probably because you end up getting a lot of pawns in the endgame. The rule is likely to make the endgame more challenging, just like the two pawns in a file rule.

  • why can't you checkmate the king with a pawn? is there a website where it says. I never knew that
