The Japanese definition of lover must be different than the English one.

I love him but god damn Misaki is stupid. How can you have sex with a man, kiss a man and not be gay or lovers with someone. that's what a lover is- someone you make LOVE to.

Okay so basically the smiley face isn't kanji, it's katakana that used to make the chi in ecchi (the word written there - I'm assuming you know what this means, if you don't, urban dictionary - NOW) be held pronounced for the length of two syllables.
