Each year, former patients from The Nebraska Medical Center's Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) return to the hospital. Their parents meet up with others who understand the unique challenges they've survived and also talk with the nurses who helped care for their babies when they were at their most fragile. Patients attending this year's event ranged in age from a few months old to 11 years old.
2012 was the first of many NICU reunions for Myles and Christian. Still babies, the two don't yet realize how much they have in common. They were both born with the same rare condition. They were both on ECMO life support at the same time. As the little boys fought to stay alive, their parents became friends. The reunion was a chance to catch up, smile, and watch the boys play as only babies can.
Each of the more than 100 families attending the reunion have similar stories of survival and of overcoming odds. One mother described the reunion as "a room full of miracles."
