Down Beat had the c.d. in its "hot box," and the 4 main critics were between 2 and 3 stars. They said things like "unlistenable spiritual quest," "tedious," "I'll never listen to this again," and the like. "Jazz Times," on the other hand, was effusive in its praise of the c.d. I think "Down Beat" has a bias against singers in general. Why they would give this 2 stars, and Lisa Sokolov's "Presence" 5 stars, is beyond me.....

@RickCornell I'm sure I read downbeat magazine's review of VOCAbuLarieS which contained nothing but praise for the genius that is Bobby McFerrin.

Is there a source that you could provide otherwise?

Down Beat panned it? No wonder I stopped reading that stuffed-shirt campground for too many writers who want to turn the beauty of individualized expression into a pseudo-intellectual pissing contest. They just don't get it. The only critics you need are your own two ears. An audience can sometimes come in handy too. Vocabularies is one of my all-time favorite recordings.
