Elmer, Elvira, Eggbert and Ellie the bluebirds were getting ready to fledge any minute. They were fascinated with the bugs that flew by. Watch their last confined moments - they left the nest the very next morning!

  • how do birds know those houses are for them?

  • I hung a sign? No, seriously, you build the box to specifications from a bluebird book, they like something away from trees and shrubbery, suspended so snakes and squirrels cannot get to them and eat the eggs, with a hole large enough for a bluebird and no peg outside the door (I guess it discourages other kinds of birds). We clean the box out after each brood by unhooking the floor and pulling out the nest. We have had chickadees nest in this box also.

  • Wow, bluebirds (not bluejays) are so rare nowadays in most places. Where was this taken?

  • The bluebird video was taken in our yard near Haymarket, VA. We had two complete broods in this box this year, as we have most years. One year we had three. Bluebirds are our absolute favorites!

  • Would this be the eastern Bluebird?

  • Yes, these are Eastern Bluebirds. We get them in this box every year.

  • They're just the cutest things I've ever seen. I just got into birding this summer when some Carolina Wrens nested in a washpot on the backporch, and I got to watch everything. So I put up a bluebird house and they raised one brood before August. I picked one up when it fledge and held it a minuite or two, nuzzled it. It was scared to death and the parents were pissed, so I set it in the grass, and they've been flying around the yard since.

  • nice video

  • Awesome video

  • Wonderful video! Great capture of the little ones! Love how they all fight for a good spot to get handouts from mama! I think the song of the Carolina Wren (7:55) gave one of them a little scare! :) The last moment of papa removing the 'diaper' is priceless! Great job!! More bluebirds for everyone!!!
