I had a similar situation in around the 5th or 6th grade, only opposite. My dad showed me how to take my math homework one step further than what had been taught in class. I added this step on my homework sheet. I was so proud of myself! Well guess what, I got a big fat 0 for the assignment. I was not told to take the problem that far. But this came from the same school system where a teacher actually sent a note with my younger brother that said... get ready... "Joey bees a bad boy!"
@HeyItzMeDawg The kid was not following directions, something more important to learn then math. Regardless if the teacher was right or wrong, the kid was wrong.
@pHANTOMpHREAK9P I think he was referring to the kinds of people who say "He's doing something wrong because he's not doing what I say". It didn't sound like a blanket statement to me.
I failed math classes regularly for this very reason. I "discovered" many shortcuts in my years in public school but was punished for using them. I am now a 22 year old astronomy major that has issues with the math of it because my skills were not nurtured appropriately. Thanks school board and shitty educators!

@JeremyES1988 You're going to have to explain that one to me. How is learning to follow directions for no apparent reason important?
