This is a ritual of welcoming the Gods back to temple after they (represented by their various statues) had finished parading around the temple neighbourhood on holy lifts during the celebration of the Gods' birthdays. The rocking motion of the lifts is said to be caused by the power of the Gods and not a deliberate act by the lift bearers.
@BioToxicate buddhist people pray to gods? but buddha never talked about the existence of gods ! the chinese buddhism was influenced by the shenism and taoism and they started believing in gods when the original indian buddhism isn't like that

@452mortar I am a Christian, too. YOU are ignorant
Nobody knows who the Author of Journey to the West is for sure, and there is evidence stories about Wukong have been around LONG before the book was written. Guess what? Jesus was kind to everyone. He was nice to pharisees who tried to ruin him, he was nice to Samaritans, the lowest of the low, and he was even nice to the people who killed him. REAL Christians don't insult other religions. People like you make the rest of us Christians look bad.

There was once a little boy shouting at my house, calling it "House of Syaitan".I blame it on his parents for never teach him how to respect others (may be his parent were doing the same thing that the child learnt from it). My mum always says: whatever religion you believe, it will be fine as long as you always behave yourself and never harm anyone". Insulting other is just against any religion. If you do it , you had just disgraced the religion that you believe in, isn't it?

Religions are something that support human spiritually. Don't insult others religion when you don believe in it, everyone have their own choice. Some of my family (my parents have different religion when they married) members are believing in Taoism and others in Christianity, we never have any fight caused by religion because we respect each other..

@2795alex Er, this is Taoism .. Buddhist people usually just pray to gods, they don't do this sort of things . Taoism do this to celebrate God's birthday or give blessing , etc . Let's not talk about what country's god support what country etc etc . Even Indian people help out at Hokkien Taoism celebration . It's Racial Harmony .

@452mortar Agreed. I have a family altar that has the Sun Wukong statue and my grandmother prays to it, among all the other idols.
The Chinese also burn offerings, including paper "Cable TV" and printed money with "National Hell Bank Note 10000000 yuan" on it.
That's one of the many reasons why I walked out of this religion. I'd rather embrace long established religions than something that has no basic ground. I'm not an Atheist, but I can smell bullshit when it's near.
