Todd Carlson, a friend of fishing guide Jim Hudson, shot the dramatic footage on a smartphone last winter when Jim was fishing with clients near Lake Superior's Apostle Islands, close to Chequamegon Bay. "This occurred on a calm day here in the Islands, but it was windy on the north shore and [this] is what happens," Jim explained. Wind on the far shore can create waves under the ice, Jim explained, which can travel quite a distance under the ice sheet, lifting it significantly -- as this video exemplifies.
