Quick playalong - Jamerson is credited with this one, but I'm not so sure - maybe he was deliberately disguising his style (was he moonlighting on this and didn't want Motown to catch him?!)
Things that make me doubt it was JJ:
1. Not enough grace notes - line is too straight
2. Tone of the bass - note volumes too even and attack to hard (limiter is OTT)
3. There's an error on the original bass (I copied it at 1:16 - Eb instead of Db) - not a common Jamerson find!
4. I am mortal (unlike Jamerson's talent), but even so the chorus doesn't feel right using only the hook. I've no doubt Jamerson could play it that quick, but it still feels real odd skipping that far with one finger.
5. The hammer-ons - Jamerson only seemed to use them on really quick lines - the ones in this can easily be played without needing to hammer-on.
'course, it's still a wonderful performance all round - it would be funny if it was Jamerson doing a disguise - I've not found any good info on the players on the session anywhere yet.
Cool! Nice that you left that mistake Eb in the second bridge, that note always makes me cringe when I hear this tune!

Listening to the song, I started having doubts, too. The Funk Brothers did have a relationship with Wilson (Berry Gordy might not have been too upset by this, after all, JW gave him his start), but as I mentioned to someone doing research, there were bassists around in the late '60s that were heavily influenced by JJ, which makes it hard to ID tracks until/unless you get confirmation. Thanks to Jamersonhook for this, very enlightening!

JJ had a long connect with Wilson and we all know he played on Higher and Higher. If anything, this tune is more JJ in style than Higher and Higher, especially as it lends itself to JJ's fave move of rolling the fore finger 'tween strings. If it's not JJ then it's a big fan of his!

Thats Emma Franklin singing the sister of Aretha, a great family of singers. Jackie Wilson did a cover of this and did not change it much.

Interesting and who do the think it might be if not JJ? Could it have been Carol Kaye? We could ask her she is around. Nice playing as usual. Andre

always a pleasure hearing and seeing you play my friend. I'm not so sure myself. i know they mixed up a lot of the credits back then but I would not rule out the possibility that this was James. He could have been experimenting, trying a straight ahead style, whatever. Can't recall hearing the original but I do sense his style in the tune.

Too cool that you can sense all that from studying the man so well.
