China - Lonely Planet: Roads Less Travelled

Lonely Planet writer Shawn Low gets off the beaten track in the Middle Kingdom's Wild West, heading into the remote mountain valleys of Yunnan Province. Sheltered from outside influences for centuries, these valleys are fast-gaining a reputation as China's adventure capital. Shawn's come to put those claims to the test. He hunts for his supper with a crossbow, crosses a raging mountain torrent on a wire thread, plays his part in the dating rituals of a remote highland tribe, bangs the drum in one of the world's oldest opera troupes and rides into the big blue yonder with the Khampa cowboys of Shangri-La.
