In this video we discuss how to use the periodic table to determine electron configuration. I also talk about how to write the noble gas notation. This is for general high school Chemsitry.

  • This helped me understand this a whole lot better but there was a part that really bumped me. On the noble gas notation for iodine

[5s2, 4d10, (5)p5] shouldnt the 5p5 have been 4p5 cause im really confused on that right now-Exam tomorrow!

  • @scRUAM What you have to remember about the s and p Blocks are that they will follow the energy levels. So when you are look at the element that you are working with if it is in the 5 period (row) and it ends in the s or p Block like Iodine the it will end with the period number as the energy level 5p5 it stands for the 5 period p is the block and Iodine is the 5 element in the p-block.

The reason why d-block went 4d10 was because we always subtract 1 from the period to start with d-blocks.

  • I'm confused about something. I noticed that some websites show the electron configuration for Bromine to be 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 3d10, 4s2, 4p5 and others like in your video show it as 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 4s2, 3d10, 3p5. How is this possible? I noticed that for a lot of the elements.

  • You can write it like "1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 3d10, 4s2, 4p5" as well they are both correct. On websites you will see it written in order of increasing energy levels meaning with all the 1, 2, 3, 4, together. I write it the other way because that is how I want my students to do it. It is just one extra step. For me as long as they get the concept of writing it out at all then I am happy.

Hope that helps if you have anymore questions please ask away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @BryanMossChemistry hey i liked your video. but I'm still confused. i understand how you said only subtract one from the d-blocks. but in your example of Br you said 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p6, 4s2, 3d10, 3d5, shouldn't it end with 4d5?

  • how is that watching 10 min videos on freaking youtube teach me better than my 11th grade, college graduate, teachers do in 4 days of class??? thanks man that helped a lot!

  • This helped SO much...especially with the whole "subtract one from the d block" thing. Thank you!!

  • You have no idea how much this helped me. Ive watched video after video, and this FINALLY explained it right to me. I also liked how you used difficult examples, rather than trying to do an electron configuration for Hydrogen or something.

  • this helped a lot.. thank you

  • oh my goodness, you are a chem 2 lifesaver! thank you so much!!:)
