Emily and her friends enjoying a baked potato picnic atop an ancient Japanese tomb. Kofun are large man-made earth mounds found in many parts of Japan. The mounds are tombs constructed between the 3rd and 7th centuries and this time is now known as the Kofun period. The most famous kofun are the large keyhole-shaped mounds though small rounded mounds such as this are also common. There were once dozens of tombs in the area around our home though today only a few (such as this) remain.

  • The history buff in me wonders if any of the ones that were bulldozed were studied or excavated before they were paved over.

I know many are off limits to archeological study because they contain ancient imperial family members and ancestors.

  • Hello dmarie1184, I know that some of the remaining mounds have indeed been examined and the contents studied though I am not sure if this happened with those mounds which are gone now. I hope so. -Kurt :-)

  • I wonder why there is only a few remaining.

The rest got in the way of construction project or something?

  • Hello allgoo19, Yes, development did indeed prevail as there is now a large prefectural museum on the land where the kofun once stood. They left a few scattered here and there over the grounds though the majority were bulldozed under to make parking lots and the like. -Kurt :-)

  • You always reply so thoughtfully, we all really appreciate that.

That said, you can always tell how awesome of a parent you are based on how fast you can scatter a group of your kid's friends. :3 There's a reward for you in the making somewhere. xD

  • Hello Skaijo, Thank you for your nice words. I will certainly try hard to be worthy of the responsibility and joy of being a parent. Thanks again! -Kurt :-)

  • @SpreadMyWings247 Really are you fluent Japanese already? Your 17 and I'm 18, I've started learning Japanese on the Internet 3 years ago back early 2008. How old did you started learning Japanese, so fast from Manga and Anime? I started when I was 15, but I still understand a little bit of Japanese and not very much in this video. I don't have a Japanese teaching school in my aura I think, but wasn't found. Studying Japanese is tricky(difficult), right?

  • Yay. Thanks to anime/manga. I could understand everything that was said in this video. :D

  • Hello TiramisuHappy, That particular girl is always a lot of fun. I'm glad that you enjoyed our little picnic on the tomb. -Kurt :-)

  • I don't think I've laughed this hard in a long time! That was HYSTERICAL!!! You really scared the living daylights out of that poor girl! If that's not the reaction in the moment of sheer terror, I don't know WHAT is!! ; P

    My sides hurt...
