Myth #4: Jesus did not claim to be God

The idea that Jesus did not claim to be God is often put in a more subtle way.

Jennings: "The word Messiah did not mean the Son of God. It simply meant 'the anointed one.'" [34:52]

[INTERVIEWS WITH PANEL OF EXPERTS: "Did Jesus claim to be God?"]

The idea that the Jewish Messiah is God himself is not something that first century Christians made up. The divinity of the Messiah is something we find throughout the Old Testament.

[INTERVIEWS WITH PANEL: "Is the Old Testament Messiah divine?"]

The great Reformed scholar Benjamin Warfield wrote:

"It is quite clear, at the outset, that the writers of the New Testament and Christ Himself understood the Old Testament to recognize and to teach that the Messiah was to be of divine nature. For example, they without hesitation support their own assertions of the Deity of Christ by appeals to Old Testament passages in which they find the Deity of the Messiah afore-proclaimed." (Dr. Benjamin B. Warfield, The Divine Messiah In The Old Testament)

As an example of this, let's look at Psalm 110, which happens to be the most quoted Old Testament passage by New Testament writers.

"The Lord said to My Lord, sit at my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool." — Psalm 110:1

Jesus himself brought this prophecy into focus when He confronted the skeptics of his day.

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, "What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?"

They said to Him, "The Son of David."

He said to them, "How then does David in the Spirit call Him "Lord,' saying:
"The LORD said to my Lord,
"Sit at My right hand,
Till I make Your enemies Your footstool"'?

If David then calls Him "Lord,' how is He his Son?" And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore. (Matthew 22:41-46)

Let's look at Psalm 110 carefully: God addresses the Son as God. He tells us that the Lord Jesus sits upon God's own throne. We have to ask: Who except God could sit upon God's throne? Jesus sits on God's throne because He always was and always will remain God in every sense of the word.

  • I think Christ Jesus made it perfectly clear to his disciples in John: "Before Abraham was, I am" I am the living bread which comes down from Heaven", "he who has me has seen my father", "I and my father are one", "I am the truth and the light" However, in the Philippians he renounced his divine state as to be man. Philippians 2:5-11 "The Humbled and Exalted Christ" Great series, thank you.

  • @NeoLeaver Do you think threats of infinite torment for finite crimes, maintaining the status quo no matter how horrendous the conditions, and breaking natural laws to impress his friends are moral? That's only the tip of the iceberg. Turning the other cheek is neither wise nor honorable. Should we just turn the other cheek to murders and tyrants? What good would that bring? The only thing that can make such a moral code good is something as unreasonable as heaven and hell.

  • .....Even if one accepts that Christ says he is the Messiah prophesised in the OT, it dosn't validate OT or any of its highly questionable ideas. For me there is such a dichotomy between the character and teachings of Christ and the God of he OT, that I am of the belief that it was 'linked' to him later by the likes of Peter, Paul and those that followed to make it more palletable to 1st century Jews. Why is a man of the Royal line of Judah thru Solomon and David a 'jobbing carpenter'?

  • Just to be clear, I'm not a Christian by any stretch of the imagination, however I have read the bible quite extensively. Its a genuinely fascinating read. To be fair to christians I cant find a single thing Christ says in the gospels that even in the modern word with all its social sensitivities that would be deemed morally questionable. I would also say there is nothing he says that a compassionate mortal couldn't conceptualise or indeed teach. Show me where he says 'I am God on earth'.....

  • Oh and Jesus famously ageed with the pharisees, come on , give me a break, you're scraping the barrel here man.

  • 1John5v20 "And we know that the Son of God is come,& hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true,& we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the TRUE GOD, & eternal life".

1Timothy 3:16 "God was manifest in the flesh"

Titus 2:13 "Looking for that blessed hope,& the glorious appearing of the great God & our Saviour Jesus Christ"

  • @ITubeUDecide its not a trinity but that God revealed himself 1 as God the Creator through the prophets even through the burning bush 2 the Holy spirit is the life force that causes all things to breath live move upon the earth 3 he appeared in human form as Jesus they are not 3 but 1 the same God that gives you breath of life the Creator of all is the Holy Spirit & God chose to visit himself directly on earth to man in form of jesus the prohets were to prepare and warn man of his coming in form

  • There is no passage in the OT that explicitly says the Anointed is divine:

    Psalm 20:6

Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. (Heb. 5:7)

    Psalm 28:8

The LORD is their strength, and he is the saving strength of his anointed.

    Psalm 84:9

Behold, O God our shield, and look upon the face of thine anointed.

    Psalm 132:17

There will I make the horn of David to bud: I have ordained a lamp for mine anointed.

  • Not according to Jews. God is not a man and man does not become God. God is spirit. Isaiah 54 speaks of Israel not a man. Pagans believed man could be God, Jews did not. Why should they? There was a history of man/gods. Egyptian, Greek,Roman. Jewish messiah will not be divine, and will not die in his mission. Did God mislead the Jews? Jesus said why call me good?

  • @ITubeUDecide did u just quote the Quran ? lol what does islam have to do with any of this? the Quran contradicts the Bible, its not talking about the same God at all. Allah is not Yahweh.
