Pavarotti became even better known throughout the world in 1990 when his rendition of Giacomo Puccini's aria, "Nessun Dorma" from Turandot was taken as the theme song of BBC's TV coverage of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy. The aria achieved pop status and remained his trademark song. This was followed by the hugely successful Three Tenors concert, held on the eve of the World Cup final at the ancient Baths of Caracalla in Rome with fellow tenors Plácido Domingo and José Carreras and conductor Zubin Mehta, which became the biggest selling classical record of all time.

Luciano Pavarotti
Nessun Dorma

ITALIAN
Nessun dorma,
nessun dorma ...
Tu pure, o Principessa,
Nella tua fredda stanza,
Guardi le stelle
Che tremano d'amore
E di speranza.

Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me,
Il nome mio nessun saprà, no, no,
Sulla tua bocca,
io lo dirò
Quando la luce
splenderà.

Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio
Che ti fa mia.

Il nome suo nessun saprà
E noi dovrem, ahimè, morir, morir...

Dilegua, notte!
Tramontate, stelle!
Tramontate, stelle!
All'alba vincerò!
Vincerò!
Vincerò!

English

No-one sleeps....no-one sleeps,
Even you, O Princess,
in your cold room,
Watch the stars
which tremble with love
and hope!

But my secret is locked within me,
no-one shall know my name!
No, no, I shall say it on your mouth
when the light breaks!

And my kiss will break the silence
that makes you mine!

(No-one shall know his name,
and we, alas, shall die!)

Vanish, o night!
Set, ye stars!
At dawn I shall win!

  • Puccini knew that there will be a Pavarotti some time in the future, so that he wrote a song especially to him.

  • this is my favorite performance of Nessun Dorma. If you get a chance, pass by my channel to hear my little rendition of it on classical guitar. Bravo Pavarotti!

  • @luckyluuk123 Simon was just shut up and watched like a chic.

  • Che voce! Un grande maestro di musica "Vincerooooooo"

  • I think that Pava knew the historic possibilities of the aria at this particular time and he summoned all of the full tenor voice to be as excellent as it was at any time in earlier years and he attacked the aria with as much energy, support, resonance, and clarity as he did in the '70's or 80's, ringing out that high B--no wavering--no searching for placement! This is simply Pava--simply stunning!

  • I remember the first time I watched the original "3 tenors" performance - on the local PBS station, during a fundraising drive - I was taping it on my VCR, and could hardly wait for it to be over to play this aria again. I had goosebumps then, and I have them again...

  • Gracias Maestro!.. GRACIAS!

  • Extraordinary talent, ty Luciano for your precious gift to humanity.

  • The worst part for me was when Simon Cowell's face appeared at the end

  • if god had a voice it was this one

  • For Christ sake!!!! What a voice!!!! I'm in tears....this guy is miraculous.

  • That 1 person who disliked this needs to be strung up by his testicles and shot in the head. Yes, each man to his own, but this is something you CANNOT hate!
