Macao is known for being one of the gambling meccas of Asian, but it appears the people there are willing to speculate on celebrity memorabilia, including a Marilyn Monroe dress, which went for a cool half million dollars.
In China's Macao, the second annual Julien's Auction had thousands of buyers from around the world bidding on a rare collection of pop culture memorabilia. The dress Marilyn Monroe wore in the film "River of No Return" fetched a whopping $504 thousand dollars.
Other items from superstars such as Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Elvis Presley were also sold for high prices in the Asian market. Julien's Auction house foresees Chinese interest increasing in the business.
[Darren Julien, President and CEO, Julien's Auctions]:
"It's a new market actually, it's training the Chinese people that not only can you collect these items but you can invest in them. And it's also training them to participate in Western-style auctions."
The exhibition of celebrity auction items was taken on tour to several major Chinese cities and helped increase interest. Asian demand was high, as the same Marilyn Monroe dress that fetched over half a million was sold for only $40,000 six years ago in the United States.
[Darren Julien, President and CEO, Julien's Auctions]:
"So really, as you can see, it's a different market over here. And since we started doing exhibitions and auction over here in Asia, we've increased our business. I mean Asia represents about 30--40 percent of our business now."
Aside from the Asian buyers, who were mostly Japanese and Chinese, bidders from the United States, Canada, France, Switzerland, the UK, and Ireland also joined in. Those who did not go in person participated in the auction with absentee, online or phone bidding.
@grangersmith i know that people are starving and its a nice gesture to help them out but if people wanna spend their money on a vintage monroe dress then what of it? Its not their fault that other people are starving so you dont have the right to critisize them about their money and they worked hard for it they deserve to spend it anyway they want. If they wanna help then they are gladly welcome to help and if they dont wanna then fuck em. And who are you to tell these people where to shove th

@grangersmith Your true interests and teeth show right through by your comment.Oh and yes I have every right to give my honest opinion to speak the truth where ever when ever I can. They have taken away everything else practically but they cannot squelch free speech or what people really think, and in the US we can still speak out without being put in prison for our beliefs.Which I am sure the rich elite would love to change.

@ZhuSeth That's just what people say when they feel threatened/guilty about their own selfishness! And that is total BS, we are told what to do with our money everyday, it's governmental law legislated by the elected officials who are bought off by private corporations. We are told we have to pay our hard earned guiltless money (not gathered by the blood sweat and tears of the poor) to pay for invasions death and wars, this example is one out of many many ways we are told how to spend our money.

Just another crazy crazy act. True value would be to invest in people, or industry that creates products that are sustainable, healthy creating a positive product and jobs. This is worthless, it's funny to think that they would buy these items believing they are worthy to invest in..Craziness pure illogical craziness! And innocent humans continue to starve, be poisoned by chems and nukes, ,jailed tortured raped homeless and murdered through a war against humanity. Twisted Rich Trolls!
