Brian Jones on John McCain
"Live Desk" 1:36pm
Interview

TRANSCRIPT:
BRIAN JONES: If the Obama campaign wants to waste money in those states they are perfectly free to do so. We feel good about where we are right now in a number of states where weve seen, actually, some tightening in the last couple of days. New Mexico, there was a poll out today that showed the race tied, last week Obama was up ten. Another poll yesterday showed Pennsylvania with us within four, last week it was double digits for Obama. So, were closing the gap in some very important states.

MACCULLUM: The NYTimes/CBS poll shows 59 percent of registered voters say Sarah Palin is not ready to be Vice President. And a 1/3 said that that was going to be important in their vote for president. Has she become a drag on the ticket?

JONES: I dont think so, I mean first off you got to remember, Sarah Palin is out there getting 10-15 times more supporters at her rallies than Joe Biden is. She also can talk about certain issues in a very, very unique way. We saw her, in the last couple of weeks, talk about womens issues, special needs children, obviously she has great credibility talking about the energy issue, a critical issue in this country right now. So she brings a lot to the table and she has been a total net positive for this ticket.

JONES: Well I think in terms of what youre going to see during the final days, you are going to see two messages that have been really resonating in our polls over the last week or so. One is this notion that Barack Obama wants to redistribute wealth in this country, today you saw Governor Richardson, one of his top advisors saying, actually it would be families making $120,000 or less would be taxed, not the $250,000 that Barack Obama had been saying. The other big message is one that Joe Biden made within the last week too, he made it pretty cogently, which is kind of rare for him, specifically saying that Barack Obama will be tested in his first six months in office. The question for the American people is, do you want to go with someone who has been tested throughout their career on foreign affairs like John McCain, or someone who has been untested like Barack Obama. So I think the economic message, the experience, foreign policy message, those are two things that youll see us hammering home on in the coming days.
