Athough our nation is in the midst of a financial crisis, the public sector has been booming in recent years. According to the TaxPayer's Alliance, more than 285,000 government jobs have been created since 2008 at the expense of the public. With regular raises, big pensions, and excellent benefits, many fiscal conservatives have grown concerned over this trend, citing massive government deficits as evidence of the current system's unsustainability. Alongside the growth of the public sector has come come the growth of public employee unions, lobbying the government to prevent layoffs and funding decreases, making a balanced budget nearly impossible to achieve.
In this video, Steven Greenhut, director of the Pacific Research Institute's Journalism Center and editor-in-chief of CalWatchdog, speaks to Students for Liberty at UC Berkeley about the disturbing growth of public employee unions as outlined in his new book, "Plunder!: How Public Employee Unions are Raiding Treasuries, Controlling Our Lives, and Bankrupting the Nation."
