Nope they're not . They have exactly the same hardware on the same clocks featuring cortex a8 cpu with 256 MB of ram and power vr sgx opengl es2 compilant gpu .

Actually, YOUR WRONG.
The iPhone 3GS is under-clocked more to save battery.
The iPod touch 3rd gen 32gb and 64gb IS faster. Look it up on youtube!
