During today's House floor debate on the non-binding Iraq resolution that condemns the escalation, Congressman Charles Gonzalez (D-TX) quotes Dick Cheney's 1991 opposition to the idea of occupying Iraq. The same thing that Cheney warned against in 1991 is happening today as a result of the policies of his Administration.
CHENEY: "If you're going to go in and try to topple Saddam Hussein, you have to go to Baghdad. Once you've got Baghdad, it's not clear what you do with it. It's not clear what kind of government you would put in place of the one that's currently there now. Is it going to be a Shia regime, a Sunni regime or a Kurdish regime? Or one that tilts toward the Baathists, or one that tilts toward the Islamic fundamentalists? How much credibility is that government going to have if it's set up by the United States military when it's there? How long does the United States military have to stay to protect the people that sign on for that government, and what happens to it once we leave?"

You know, if you think about this, the fact that Cheney would be willing to counteract his own initial rationale in justifying the present war actually serves to vindicate him, in many ways. Think about it. Justifying invasion means admitting he was wrong in 1991. Even with a best case scenario in the present the act of justifying the war now undermines him. His best interest would have been to persuade the Bush Administration to hold back.
