you know, you could actually use a monopod for external mics such as the Zoom series, as long as it has a tripod mount. monopods actually use a swivel head, so its easy to adjust, and most of them are collapsable.

I've just completed this project - total cost under £10
Ext. pole from Screwfix - £9.39
3/8 BSW x 1" socket cap bolt+nut - 30p from local ironmonger,
using a socket cap bolt instead of a set bolt means there's no danger of damaging the plastic end cap when tightening.
