  • I think straight ahead jazz I would tend to avoid it. But for more of a contemporary or fusion thing it would probably be part of my signal chain.

  • Is a compressor important to get a Jazz tone?

What are the three most important stompboxes for Jazz Playing?

  • @PF1964 Three most important stompboxes for Jazz playing. Hmmmmmmm. if it's a straight ahead jazz/big band gig; I might be tempted not to use any pedals at all. That's assuming you're using a quality amp with a good EQ and plenty of clean gain. If you are struggling with your amp an EQ pedal would be in order. Some guys like a chorus pedal so they cop the sound of a roland amp. Maybe a reverb pedal.

For jazz/fusion gigs the sky is the limit.

  • Thank you! That was a fine demonstration.

The sound I'm looking for is a bit different. I've been looking for that long sustain sound to sustain at length certain bending notes while I play my acoustic guitar. Or maybe it's a playing trick and you can get that sound without a pedal. I do it without one, but I wish it would last about 3 or 4 times longer.

I'm pretty sure a compression pedal is the thing I'm looking for. Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • @Malepin Yeah, as far as most guitar compression pedals are concerned they're designed knowing that most guitarists are going for the sustain thing. There's a ton of pedals out there. But the one I've seen on every pro's pedalboard is the good old MXR DynaComp.

  • @PF1964 I agree with @thatgtrguy. Compressors tend to kill the dynamics of a guitar's sound, which is vital to most jazz guitarists.

  • this baby is the juice to my sound good for that special touch in solos

  • Cool Review.

    Very detailed and informative.
